US Elections: Path clear for Trump to gain nomination - Rabobank

Michael Every, Head of Financial Markets Research at Rabobank, suggests that with Ted Cruz dropping out of the Republican primary race, the path now seems clear for Donald Trump to gain the nomination in June.‎

Key Quotes

“That certainly seems to herald the end of political business as usual for the Republicans, if not for the US - yet. Or would the presumptive nominee Trump moderate his tone considerably and begin to toe the party line? It may be wise to do so. After all, and now we quote former President Nixon, the Republican presidential candidate should be able to “Run to the right in the primary election, and then run to the center in the general election”.

Indeed, in his Indiana victory speech Trump said that “We are going to love each other, cherish each other, take care of each other, and we are going to have great economic development”. That very much looks like a first gesture of conciliation, but only time will tell whether Trump is capable of credibly moving to the center of the electoral spectrum without alienating his current support base.

Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders beat Hillary Clinton for the 18th time, and despite a significant demographic disadvantage and daunting delegate maths given her lead, he is clearly going to stay in the race a while longer – especially given California has yet to vote. Even though most polls put Clinton ahead by 7-10 points in the Golden State, Sanders has been able to pull off shock victories in multiple occasions (remember Michigan?).”

As for today’s trade so far, the cable is seen attempting a minor-bounce from five-day troughs and finds support from stabilizing oil prices and a broadly muted US dollar.
